Endodontic Treatment

It is often thought that the best course of treatment for a severely infected tooth is its extraction and up until recently this was the only option. However, at Moorebank Dental we believe it can be more beneficial having your own tooth opposed to an artificial one. Commonly referred to as root canal therapy, endodontic treatment is used to save these infected teeth which would previously have been extracted.

An infection will generally attack the pulp of the tooth which is found in the root canal of the tooth. It is within this area the blood and nerve tissues, necessary for the development of the tooth are housed, which is why this infection is notoriously painful. Symptoms of an infected tooth can include,

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Throbbing, pain or swelling in the tooth and gums.
  • Bad or sour taste in the mouth.
  • Pain or discomfort upon biting or applying pressure to the tooth.
  • Any of these symptoms appearing then disappearing in intervals.

Endodontic Treatment will vary, depending on the severity of the infections and may require more than one visit to completely combat the infections. Throughout treatment the infected pulp will be removed and the root canal is cleaned, disinfected and sealed with a white filling to prevent further infection and pain and leave your tooth with a natural appearance. Moorebank Dental’s conscientious staff will often recommend follow-up visits to ensure the tooth is healing correctly. In the majority of cases the tooth retains its long term durability, functionality and appearance. Sometimes a crown may be fitted over the tooth to ensure maximum protection and restore a more natural appearance and structure.
