Orthodontics

What Is Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a practice of dentistry that concentrates on the prevention and correction of misaligned teeth and/or jaw. Orthodontics primarily improves the function of your teeth, the jaw and bite relationship while secondarily they can improve their appearance. If the two aren’t functioning correctly, your chewing ability and speech can be affected, impacting on daily life.

Expansion Plates For Children

Expansion plates used to widen the jaws if crowding is perceived to be a major concern early on.

Expansion plates function by rotating a small screw in the plate making it widen, applying pressure on the jaw and slowly widening the palate.

While removable, expansion plates are only successful if worn at all times. It’s common for expansion to relapse if the plate is removed.

Expansion takes approximately six to twelve months, following which a plate is worn as a retainer for another year to 18 months. The objective of early treatment is to create adequate space for the adult teeth before they erupt to prevent more complicated braces treatment.
