Wisdom teeth can be found at the very back of the mouth on either side of the upper and lower jaws and are generally the final teeth to erupt. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth are the most common dental issues to surface throughout the development of the wisdom teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth occur when there is not enough space for the new teeth to erupt, causing them to grow in to other teeth, gums or jaw bone. This can result in crowding or even a misalignment of the jaw. Partially erupted wisdom teeth become problematic as they leave a small pocket of gum tissue exposed and vulnerable to painful, recurrent infection.
The commonly recommended treatment for either of these issues is the extraction of one or all of the wisdom teeth. This can often be complete in our practice with the use of a local anaesthetic. However, for more complex procedures a general anaesthetic may be recommended and the procedure completed in hospital.
