Gum (Periodontal) Disease

Gum Disease, also known as Periodontal Disease, is caused by the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth. If left untreated this bacterial growth can cause reddening and inflammation of the surrounding gums and may even lead to bone loss around the teeth.

Gum Disease is much easier to treat in its early stages (known as Gingivitis). As bacteria accumulate on the teeth, they begin to attack the soft tissue of the gums, causing redness and soreness. The gums may become inflamed and even bleed during brushing; a common sign of Gingivitis.

If left untreated, Gingivitis can progress to Periodontitis, a serious condition where bacteria delve deeper into the gums, affecting the ligaments and bone structure which hold the tooth in place. This can result in the reduction of supporting bone and over time, loss of teeth.

Periodontal Disease is usually painless and as such some patients are unaware of any problems until it is too late. We recommend a regular, 6 monthly dental assessment to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy.
